I'm torn...

Ok.. everybody knows that the Steelers may be at the end or an era if the majority of the team were to be sold to someone other than a Rooney.  Now there is word that the other owners may not let that happen and will try to pressure the Rooneys who are selling to sell to their brother Art II with his son Dan Rooney and not Billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller.

Here is where I am torn.

The NFL looks like it will be changing in the near future from the revenue sharing, every team has an equal shot at keeping top talent, generally level playing field of today to one that is more like Major League Baseball.

I don't have to tell you how much that model of business does NOT work for the fans of smaller market teams.

I'm torn that if the Rooney's retain control, they will not be able to compete with the likes of Jerry Jones  and will end up like the Pirates.

I would hate to see the Rooney's lose control the the Steelers, I really would... but if a Billionaire owns the team, I think they will have a much better shot at remaining competitive in the future NFL landscape.

But that would suck wouldn't it?  The fact that I have to even think about that sucks.  I just think we will be looking back at these years as the golden era of the NFL when the business model changes and Steeler fans have a chance to be on the outside looking in and the only way to avoid it will be if the best owners in football are forced out.  We went through it with the Pirates... we all knew that deep down when Sid "40 yards in 40 seconds" Bream's Forest Gump like leg braces lumbered around third at 33 1/3 speed and beat out Barry "pre-needle" Bond's throw to the plate that that would be the end of the Pirates.  We knew they wouldn't have a team like that again for a long time... it has turned out to be longer than we could have imagined.

So, what will be bad will be good and what will be good will be bad.  I am going to have to look at it like the Rooney's themselves did when they would let players go who had been with the team for years.  I have to think of the team first and I'm going to have to support the billionaire.  That, my friends, is the definition of suck.

  1. I feel your pain.  I'm trying to imagine the team without a Rooney at the helm and it just hurts, but at the same time, we have to be able to compete somehow.  The Pirates have redefined futility in sport.  The Steelers can't end up like that.
