Willie Parker

e agents, seven of them being unrestricted.  If unsigned, the Steelers would lose players like Willie Parker, Casey Hampton, Deshea Townsend, Heath Miller, William Gay, Ryan Clark, Brett Keisel, and everybody's favorite kicker, Jeff Reid.  With the signing of James Harrison, who will be 32 by the start of the 2010 season, the Steelers may have put themselves in a hole salary cap wise (assuming a new CBA is put into effect and 2010 is not an uncapped year).  With the Steelers right up against the cap, and rookie signings not taken care of, little wiggle room will be available to give these potential free agents a new contract.

oethlisberger proved that he can play with an injured shoulder and play quite well.  Halfback, Willie Parker, had a tremendous day after returning from injury as he rushed for 115 yards.  Another player who deserves mention is wide receiver, Hines Ward.  Whenever the Steelers needed a big catch it seemed that Ward was there to pick up the first down.  Ward had eleven catches for 124 yards.

ing in to this game the Steelers were once again burdened with injuries to some key starters.  Willie Parker and Lamarr Woodley were both injured, and Ben Roethlisberger started at quarterback with an ailing shoulder.  Filling in for

Leftwich began the third quarter with a 50-yard pass to Nate Washington.  This led to Willie Parker’s touchdown run, giving the Steelers a 16-6 lead.  Parker had a solid return carrying the ball 21 times for 70 yards and a touchdown.  But the player to watch on this night was Byron Leftwich.  On the next offensive drive, Leftwich hooked up with Santonio Holmes for a touchdown, to put the game out of reach.  Leftwich ended his spectacular night going 7-10 for 129 yards and a touchdown, a rating of 145.8.

With injuries hampering such key players as Willie Parker, Troy Polamalu, and Casey Hampton, Santonio Holmes now embroiled in legal issues, and no depth at punter and long snapper, the Steelers could be in for a long, uphill battle the rest of the way.

lmes, is it going to be difficult putting the ball back in Ward's hands?

Still no word on whether Willie Parker will play on Sunday.  At this point I'm going to anticipate seeing Mewelde Moore continuing as the main RB, backed up by Najeh Davenport.  I think Moore will turn in another solid performance against the Giants, so I'm not terribly concerned.  Better for Parker to get healthy.  We have plenty of other tough teams to face.

14 receiving yards and another touchdown on five catches.  At this point, I have to ask -- if Willie Parker does come back from his close encounter with a hole in time to face the Giants next weekend, would it be worth it to put him in as the starter over Moore, who has had two fantasic games?  I have nothing but respect for Parker and want to see him back on the field, but Moore has delivered in the starting role, and I'm not so sure it would be wise to take him out and put in a guy who hasn't played in a month.  I say give Moore the start against New York, and if Parker is healthy, have him ready to play in the secondary slot.  Put Najeh Davenport or Gary Russell in the third-string role.  At this point, I don't think we're going to miss Rashard Mendenhall.  I think we could afford to trade him in the offseason after he heals.

e End, Brett Keisel, is expected to play Sunday after missing three games with a calf injury.  Willie Parker is listed as day-to-day, but the Steelers are still hoping he will be able to start against the Bengals.  The bye week may not have been more important to anybody than Ben Roethlisberger.    Roethlisberger has been hit early and often since the start of the season.  This bye week was essential to Ben’s health this season.  Hopefully it gave him ample time to rest up and recover from his strained shoulder.

Steelers needed this week to heal up, with the running back and D-line positions being hardest hit. Willie Parker looks set to return, which will take some of the load off of Big Ben. He’s partnered up with Najeh Davenport, who made his return last week after first round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall was lost for the season.

Troy Polamalu.  The Pittsburgh offense did their part by not turning the ball over once.  Willie Parker had another great game as he rushed for over 100 yards, and finished with 105 yards for the night.

Willie Parker. Willie-Bleepin’-Parker. The first Sunday of NFL and there I was. Like many of us, I had my snacks, beverages, I had my computer set to the side,  and I was logged in to ESPN Fantasy cast so that I could keep up with my team while the Texans were playing.  Houston Texans vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers on opening Sunday. Matt Schaub. Andre Johnson. This was going to be good.
