Pittsburgh

K'Waun Williams from St. Joseph's in Montvale, NJ has orally committed to the University of Pittsburgh.  His commitment is listed as a solid verbal.  He is a defensive back and also played wide receiver during his junior season.

Syracuse was 3-9 last year overall and 1-6 in the Big East.  Their only victory came against Louisville for the second straight year.  The Orange will be much more competitive and will have the oppurtunity for some big upsets this year.  Do not expect Marrone to let this team roll over and die.

The 2010 Pitt class is gaining members rapidly.  Just two days after TJ Clemmings verbal commitment, a wide receiver from Harrisburg has chosen to join the Panthers.  It appears as if now seems to be the prime time for Wannstedt to pick up as many recruits as possible.  Hopefully, there are still quite a few five star players that we may have to wait until February for a commitment.

True to his word, head coach Dave Wannstedt, has locked up a big time recruit.  TJ Clemmings is a standout star from Paterson Catholic in New Jersey.  After the slow start to the recruiting season, Wannstedt said he expected more commitments coming in with some camps they have coming up.

Coming off a super bowl victory last season, hopes couldn't be higher for the 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers, as they should be.  While the team is returning 20 out of 22 starters from that super bowl run (only losing Larry Foote and Bryant Mcfadden), things begin to look bleak as we look at the possible roster a year from now.  In 2010, the Steelers will have an alarming number of key players that will be free agents if these players do not re-sign.

sp;      Six time All-pro LB James Harrison turned down the third offer made by Pittsburgh today. Harrison signed with Pitt. in April 2006 to a four year 5.5 million dollar deal that ends at the end of the 2009 season. Obviously the Steelers would much rather keep Harrison than watch him lead some one else's defense through the playoffs and into the Superbowl like he did this year. He was absolutely unforgiving with his 59 tackles, 16 sacks, 7 forced fumbles and 1 record breaking interception. LEGIONDARY!!!  Thank you James Harrison for the awesome year of football, hope to see you in black & gold in 2010.

Well it was another close one that our defense definitely kept us in, but who knew we'd be playing the refs this time too?  From a BS interference call leading to SD's only touchdown, a phantom hold calling back Fast Willie's 5 yard scamper for a TD, and the most bizarre thing I have ever seen at the end of the game, negating a fumble return by Troy for a TD.

3 October 2008

This week it was the University of South Florida in its dramatic 26-21 loss to unranked Pittsburgh. USF, at the time, had risen to the #10 spot in the polls and appeared to be the Big East’s savior. Not anymore, chop! This is the second consecutive year that the Bulls have had their hopes (and heads?) slashed on a Thursday. In the tumultuous anarchy that was last year’s polls, USF had reached the #2 spot in the country before losing on a Thursday to an unranked Rutgers team 30-27. I’m not making this stuff up, I promise. In the five games that have featured ranked teams on a Thursday this year, the aforementioned schools are a combined 1-4. #24 South Carolina? Chop, courtesy of Vanderbilt. #21 West Virginia? Chop, courtesy of Colorado. #1 Southern Cal? Chop, courtesy of Oregon State. In fact, before Utah's win last night, one had to go all the way back to November 15 of 2007 to find a higher-ranked school that survived the dreaded Thursday night game (#7 WVU beating Louisville 38-31). In last year’s football season, a higher ranked team lost 6 times on Thursdays. In 2006, 7 were upset.  What are we to make of this scary trend? Does the shorter week and, thus, less prep time really play that large of a part in these matches? Do the underdogs play their hearts out because many of them know this will be the only time they’ll be on ESPN? Or, in the spirit of October, is Thursday night just cursed? Whatever the case, this is a trend that has reached a point where it can no longer be ignored. Want a BCS sleeper? Look for a team that sticks to Saturdays.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review gives us the finalized, 53-man roster for the 2008 season.  A few standouts:

"Willie Parker retains starter status but won't be a workhorse as in previous seasons."  Obviously the team is counting on Rashard Mendenhall to start living up to the hype in order to give the Steelers the one-two punch on the ground that has been so important.  Mewelde Moore has been tapped as the designated third-down man.  I still have questions that the game against Houston will have to answer.

Colts.  Banks isn't a hater, he's just a member of a group that has a culture which overlooks Pittsburgh unless we do something spectacular, and then is quick to move back to other favored teams.

irder than when we picked up Mike Tomczak.  Let's say it together: "Byron Leftwich of the Pittsburgh Steelers."  I can't get my head around it.  I am a huge Charlie Batch fan.  I think he could get a starting job with a lot of different clubs, and the fact that he stays with the black-and-gold really warms my heart.  So when he went down, I was upset.  I didn't expect the team to snap up Leftwich, after the Titans -- of all teams -- passed on him.  I am pleasantly surprised with his preseason performance, but I'm not holding my breath.
