IT'S A BIRD...IT'S PLANE...NO, IT'S DWIGHT HOWARD!

Dwight Howard

I've always thought Superman is white, wears red boots, stands 6-foot-4 and resides in Metropolis. Now, I know he's black, wears white Adidas TS, stands 6-foot-11 and lives in Orlando.

If you don't believe in superheroes then you haven't seen Dwight Howard. If you still think a man can't fly, then you missed Saturday's All-Star Slam Dunk competition. It might say NBA player on his calling card but that is just secret identity stuff. Dwight Howard is Superman. Sorry, Shaq. I'm a believer. I believe there is a real-life superhero who lives among us and he just flew right over the city of New Orleans and performed a highlight deed that will forever be known around basketball circles as the "Superman dunk."

Dr. J opened our eyes to the world of high-wire acts with his "free throw line takeoff" in 1976. Michael Jordan gave us "Kiss the rim" and "figure 8" in 1987. Dominique Wilkins introduced us to the "Windmill" in 1984 and 1988. J.R. Rider came up with the "East Bay funk" for his between-the-legs-throwdown in 1994 that has now been sampled more times than a Michael Jackson song. Vince Carter wowed us in 2000 with his reverse-360-tomahawk that to this day no one has been able to explain nor define.

Which brings us to 2008. Poor Gerald Green. Any other year, his "birthday cake" dunk would have been good enough to take home the slam dunk title. And how in the world was that a 46? The judges need their eyes checked because they missed out on a good dunk. I guess when you follow D12, you better come with kryptonite because Superman stole the show and saved the dunk contest from the evil hands of Green, Rudy Gay and Jomario Moon.

What Dwight Howard did in last Saturday's Slam Dunk contest was thought to be physically and humanly impossible. Not just the "Superman" dunk but all four slams were out of this planet. It's something you can only do in a video game. It's a bedtime story your mom used to share with you back in the day. Thank you, Dwight Howard for making the IMPOSSIBLE HAPPEN!

How's that for an NBA slogan.
