Hello Stiller Nation. This is my first post so I'm breaking the ice by calling out one of my favorite Steelers of all-time, Hines Ward.
Last week, QB Ben Roethlisberger was asked what he wanted to see done this offseason. Big Ben said he wanted to get his contract extension done as soon as possible and was hoping the Steelers would draft a tall wide receiver. After I read it, it never gave me the impression that Roethlisberger was demanding the Steelers to take big receiver (like 6-foot-5 big) in the early rounds. He just wanted to let the organization know to at least think about it when a tall receiver is on the board. Fine.
Well, that innocent comment traveled all the way to Atlanta where Hines Ward is recovering from his knee surgery. Ward got all upset and went Psycho Ward on Post-Gazette's beat writer Ed Bouchette. He told the PG that, "If they go and get a tall receiver in the first round, someone's got to lose a job. Now we had all these weapons around us, now what are we going to do? "I was here with me, Plax and Antwaan; we had three deadly weapons. Did that win us a Super Bowl? No, the year we won the Super Bowl we had me, Antwaan and Cedrick Wilson. If there's a formula for bringing a tall guy in to win, I don't buy that."
A word to Hines Ward: "Chill."
Nobody is going to lose their job. Well, maybe Ced Wilson and Willie Reid but that's it. Santonio Holmes is not going anywhere and Nate Washington is safe too. And Hines Ward? C'mon! Hines Ward is the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is the face of a hard-working, tough-minded franchise. He embodies all that is Pittsburgh. When Ward is done playing, his No. 86 jersey should be in the Hall of Fame. I have one hanging in my closet. I love Hines. But he should stop feeling "dissed" all the time. Ward has always felt overlooked or slighted ever since the Steelers drafted him. He felt dissed when they drafted Plaxico Burress and he felt dissed when they drafted Troy Edwards. Well, last time I checked those two are no longer getting paychecks from the Steelers. So, Hines. Don't take everything so personal. Just heal up for next season and do what you do.
